Job Summary: The Assistant Coach-Wrestling/Dorm Manager position is a live-in position that has duel responsibilities as an Assistant Coach for the Wrestling team and as a Dorm Manager for one of the residential dorms located on the Arkansas City Campus. As an Assistant Coach, this position is responsible for assisting with various aspects of the Wrestling program, such as recruiting, planning, coaching, scheduling opponents, training team members and coordinating statistics. As the Dorm Manager, this positon is responsible for overseeing students in the dormitory and assists in the development and implementation of all residential and community activities.
Position Duties: •Assists the head coach in managing and directing the wrestling program. •Teach fundamentals and techniques, as directed by the Head Coach. •Assists the Head Coach with all aspects of the team including training, competing and scheduling. •Coordinate facility set up for game day. •Coordinate study hall for team. •Assists with the monitoring of daily academic reports for program. •Assists with the recruiting process. •Coordinate with Student Services for all international recruits admissions requirements. •Teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior. •Represent Cowley College and the Athletic Department in a professional manner. •Be familiar with and follow all policies and procedures of the KJCCC and NJCAA. •Organize and maintain accurate inventory of equipment and uniforms. •Assist with coordination of travel arrangements. •Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletics department, attends department meetings and activities, and always represents the college positively when interacting with the community, other college departments, alumni, high school and club coaches, media and general public.
Dorm Manager •Act as a positive role model and will work directly with dormitory students in the development and enforcement of rules to assure proper student conduct and care of facilities. •Assist in the training and mentoring of new Resident Assistants (RA). Assist with RA training program each semester. •Develop a semester dorm activity schedule and coordinate communication of events with Resident Assistants, Dorm Managers, Director of Student Life and the Director of Housing. oCoordinate Christmas party. o1-2 larger events per semester (specific to Dormitory). oCreate and submit activities schedule for semester at least 2 weeks prior to start of semester. oManage budget for activities. oCommunicate and Market each activity throughout campus. •Supervise, direct, develop, mentor, select, train and evaluate 2-3 Resident Assistants, connecting student growth and development to specific learning outcomes. oSchedule weekly meetings with RA, providing feedback to Director of Housing. •Manage all room changes. Check in/out students during move-in/move-out days and throughout the semester. Inspect for damage during check-out. •Maintain Rooming Roster with 100% accuracy. •Maintain all housing reports. •Conduct regular inspections for the appearance, operation, safety and security of the dormitories and report all issues to the Director of Housing. oMust conduct inspections at least twice a semester. oFollow-up 24 hours after a concern is found. •Assist with all safety drills, room and drug inspections. •Attend weekly manager meetings. •On-call rotation for the 5 campus dormitories. •Follow-up on all student concerns. •Identify and refer students to College services, including but not limited to, Student Life, Counselor, Director of Health Services and Tutoring. •Process and deliver student mail for dormitory. •Provide Wrestling travel and recruitment schedule to the Director of Housing.
Required Knowledge and Skills: •Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student athletes in the Wrestling program. •Ability to understand and adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the College, Jayhawk Athletic Conference and NJCAA. •Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to teamwork, process leadership and consensus decision making. •Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. •Ability to integrate resources, policies and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. •Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner. •Knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision, as needed. •Ability to apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints. •Comprehensive understanding of college housing and its interrelationship with student satisfaction and student learning. •Must possess accurate record keeping skills. •Must possess a positive attitude towards students and understand their social and personal development needs. •Must have the ability to remain calm in tense situations and effectively deal with confrontational situations. •Excellent leadership skills. •Demonstrated commitment to supporting and participating in the overall athletic program, student activities and College events. •Ability to hire and supervise qualified volunteers and student workers. •Ability to observe and evaluate total program and make recommendations to the Athletic Director. •Ability to teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior. •Ability to market and promote Cowley College Wrestling Program. •Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality. •Excellent communications skills, both written and oral. •Excellent human relations skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations. •Understanding of and commitment to AQIP.
Required Education Background: •Bachelor’s Degree, required. Master’s Degree, preferred. •CPR and First Aid Certification, preferred.
Required Experience: •Minimum of 2 years collegiate wrestling coaching or equivalent experience. •A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the community college mission and philosophy. •Experience in the development and enforcement of student conduct. •Experience working with student populations. •Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable on Cowley Colleges’ vehicle insurance plan. Physical Requirements: Ability to traverse stairs; Ability to maintain physical mobility and composure and to assist with physical student activity; Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; ability to move freely around the campus and outreach centers; ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, reach and grasp as required to perform responsibilities; ability to drive motor vehicle.
Work Environment: Coaches are responsible for maintaining an environment free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment. Work is performed indoors and/or outdoors. Work is also performed throughout dorm building, office location and throughout the campus. Travel required, including overnight.
