Summary: Beat the Streets (BTS), established in 2006, is a sport-based youth development organization whose mission is to develop the full human and athletic potential of urban youth and to strengthen the wrestling culture within New York City. BTS works with an average of 2,500 male and female student-athletes in all five boroughs, aged 10-18. Programs include the Academy, the Junior League and the Training Center. In addition, BTS partners with the NYC Department of Education’s Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) that sponsors a boys and co-ed wrestling season in the winter and a girls wrestling season in the spring.
Reporting to the Director of Programming, the Head Boys Coach will play a critical role in delivering positive youth development in settings that take place on and off the mat in all five boroughs of New York City. The primary responsibility for the Head Boys Coach is to serve as a mentor by building strong relationships with our student-athletes and to motivate and support them in all that they do. The Head Boys Coach will also work closely with coaches and parents from the BTS Junior League & the PSAL High School programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead wrestling practice at various BTS and PSAL programs
- Promote participation at all BTS programs
- Work closely with the Dir. of Programming to ensure proper data/record keeping with regard to program visits, competitions (and other program-related data)
- Integrate social-emotional learning into wrestling practice and interactions with student-athletes.
- Plan and travel with student-athletes to wrestling competitions in and outside of New York City.
- Manage the annual boy’s wrestling budget
- Recruit student-athletes to the BTS Academy and ensure attendance at Academy Days.
- Help plan and lead various aspects of the BTS Academy including wrestling practice, skills instruction, life skill workshops, and various events associated with the BTS Academy
- Plan and lead?all relevant camps and clinics where boys participate?during the?year
- Co-lead all coach education efforts
- Co-lead middle school and high school recruiting efforts
- Visit, evaluate, and assist BTS’s Junior League and PSAL high school girls wrestling programs
- Attend and support all enrichment program activities provided by BTS
- Ensure each training center site has met our safe standards for practice
- Regional (and occasionally, national) travel and flexibility to work in the evenings and on weekends
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong wrestling background (as a coach and/or athlete)
- Pass USAW’s background check
- Various certifications including CPR, First-Aid, Concussion, Safe Sport and USAW’s Bronze-level certification (can complete upon being hired)
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with sports-based youth development
- Experience working with diverse youth ages 11-18
- Familiarity with NYC public schools
